Insufflator systems are an essential component in laparoscopic surgeries that are performed in operating rooms. Insufflators are used for pumping carbon dioxide into the abdominal cavity to create a pneumoperitoneum in preparation for laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery. The pumping of the gas creates sufficient space within the abdominal cavity for insertion and manipulation of laparoscopic devices with an adequate optical field. Carbon dioxide is currently the insufflation gas of choice for laparoscopy because it fulfills most of the requirements for an ideal insufflation gas, namely being colorless, nonflammable and is rapidly excreted from circulation. Insufflators are found in many multi-specialty ORs, although insufflators are used infrequently in many of them. These devices are often packaged with video systems and are rarely sold alone. The market consists of veress needles, insufflators and insufflation tubing. The vast majority of laparoscopy procedures require insufflation.

Gastric banding is the least invasive form of bariatric surgery, and is performed laparoscopically. The gastric band is an inflatable silicone band that is placed around the top exterior portion of the stomach. This placement reduces the size of the stomach pouch, thereby restricting the amount of food that the stomach can hold. The band also increases the amount of time required for food to enter the stomach, giving the opportunity for the sense of satiety to be met with the release of peptide YY.

Hand-assisted devices are used mainly during hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS). HALS is a type of surgery that allows the surgeon to use his or her non-dominant hand through a hand port device in conjunction with standard laparoscopic instruments held in the dominant hand. With both the hand and laparoscopic instruments working in tandem, the surgeon has better control of the operation and has better depth perception and tactile sensation, which aids in tissue extraction and reduces operative time. This technique effectively reduces the level of difficulty associated with performing laparoscopic procedures as surgeons do not have to rely solely on the video image in order to manipulate their instruments. HALS is predominantly used during colectomies, nephrectomies, splenectomies and the resection of the large intestine, kidney and liver. This technique is usually employed on obese patients undergoing the aforementioned procedures, as it makes operating on larger patients significantly easier.
