The application of laser technology in gynecology first emerged in 1973, when CO2 lasers were successfully used to treat cervical erosions. While the use of lasers for gynecology treatments is well established, the use of laser treatments has historically been more popular in the field of dermatology. Starting in 2012, there has been a resurgence of gynecologists investing in laser systems and the treatments are rapidly becoming more popular both with medical professionals and patients. Several types of lasers are available reflecting the advancements in the field of laser technology. The CO2 laser is the most versatile and common type of laser on the market. Due to its limited depth of penetration (0.1 mm to 0.5 mm) and lateral thermal damage (0.5 mm), CO2 lasers have been proven to be a safe and effective treatment option. Additional laser types include: neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG), Erbium-YAG (Er:YAG), and Hybrid Fractional Laser (HFL).

Tissue sealants and glues are used in certain surgical procedures and for some types of bleeding to seal the edges of tissue together; thus, tissue sealants can also be used to seal blood vessels, causing hemostasis. Even though some products are indicated only for tissue sealing, they can also be used off-label as a hemostat as well.

Hemostats, also known as anti-hemorrhagic agents are substances that promote hemostasis, the process which causes bleeding to stop. There are a number of topical hemostats used in surgeries. Topical hemostats are suitable for minor bleeding and oozing blood from injured capillaries and venules. Physiologic hemostasis occurs with vascular constriction and is a complex process in which blood changes from a fluid to a solid state in order to control tissue damage and bleeding. Thrombin binds to platelets and becomes activated. They activate fibrinogen into fibrin. The fibrin monomers combine to create fibrin structures that coagulate open arteries. Platelets aggregate at the injury site (the surgical incision) to form a temporary plug.

The Japanese market for wound and tissue management includes any device that treats wounds to the skin, dermal layers and adjacent subcutaneous tissues in addition to devices that manage trauma to tissue and blood vessels during surgery. Wound management devices treat external wounds, while dressings, compression and negative pressure wound therapy aid the bodys innate ability to heal skin, surgical and chronic wounds. Devices used for tissue management help stop bleeding, close surgical incisions and prevent the scarring of internal tissue. Wound closure devices hold together tissue long enough for the body to develop scar tissue. Wound and tissue management devices are essential to individuals who lack a properly functioning circulatory system and who have a decreased ability to induce blood coagulation or the inflammatory response.
