Physiologic hemostasis occurs with vascular constriction and is a complex process in which blood changes from a fluid to a solid state in order to control tissue damage and bleeding. Thrombin binds to platelets and becomes activated. They activate fibrinogen into fibrin. The fibrin monomers combine to create fibrin structures that coagulate open arteries. Platelets aggregate at the injury site (the surgical incision) to form a temporary plug.
