Video Endoscopy Market Insights

Growth in the market has been primarily driven by the conversion of the HD installed base to 4K technology. 4K surgical cameras produce superior image quality compared to their HD counterparts. 4K resolution features four times the number of pixels compared to HD, which is very beneficial for enhanced zooming capabilities and for situations where the surgeon cannot directly see the tissue being operated on, such as during minimally invasive surgery.

US Video Endoscopy Market Size by Segment, 2016-2026

The worldwide breakout of COVID19 in late 2019 and early 2020 has disrupted supply and distribution chains for many large healthcare manufacturers, both in the U.S. and globally. Due to the current situation in most hospitals, replacing capital equipment is not expected to be a high priority throughout this pandemic, as long as the original equipment is still functioning. This will result in a dip in market growth for 2020.

The introduction of combination consoles puts a strain on the sales of the individual video endoscopy devices. These consoles combine the camera control unit, image management device, and light source into one device. As of August 2020, Arthrex and Smith & Nephew are the only competitors with such a device on the market.

Impact of COVID19 On the Video Endoscopy Market in the US

The video endoscopy market has seen a substantial drop in sales in Q1 and Q2; however, most competitors are expecting sales to pick up during the last half of the year. Sales in the surgical camera system, image management device, light source, and medical photo printer markets are expected to pick up in the last half of 2020.

Most competitors did see a significant decrease in sales in the first half of 2020. In spite of that, the US video endoscopy market size is expected to reach pre-COVID19 levels in late 2020 / early 2021.

Video Endoscopy Market Share Insight

US Video Endoscopy Market Leaders Stryker led the U.S. market for video endoscopy by 2020. In May 2019, the company introduced its first Native 4K camera system, the 1688™ Advanced Imaging Modalities (AIM) 4K Platform: a complete visualization platform for surgical specialties. The system supports Spy near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging, which allows the surgeon to see indocyanine green (ICG) dye injected into the patient’s blood.

The second leading competitor in the U.S. video endoscopy market was Arthrex. In 2015, Arthrex released the SynergyHD4 4K camera system, which was the world’s first 4K camera on the market. The continued success of the SynergyHD3 camera system and the introduction of the first 4K camera have fostered high brand recognition for Arthrex and bolstered its presence in the surgical camera market, resulting in continued market share gains.

By 2020, the third leading competitor in the US market was Karl Storz. The company has gained a considerable market share since the release of its Native 4K imaging platform Image1 S 4U in October 2017. This system features two of Karl Storz’s advanced imaging techniques: Clara and Chroma. Clara is used to lighten dark areas of images without adjusting the brightness of the light source. Chroma improves color contrast whilst preserving natural color perception to help with tissue differentiation and the identification of blood vessels.
