Product Description
Overall, the market for sleep therapy interfaces is set to grow at a faster rate than the positive airway pressure device market. Specifically driving growth in that market is the full-face and nasal pillow options, as they offer greater patient comfort and have grown quite drastically in recent years. On the other hand, within the PAP device market, there has been a significant shift in markets away from CPAP devices towards APAP versions.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a respiratory disorder, wherein an individuals airway is obstructed during sleep as muscles relax and the airway walls and tissue collapse. The resulting asphyxia arouses the individual from the deeper stages of sleep so that normal breathing can be restored. It is this disruption of regular sleep rhythms that causes the negative symptoms associated with sleep apnea. During these events (termed apneic events), breathing ceases long enough to allow several normal breaths to be missed. In order to be considered an apneic event, a ten-second interval between breaths and neurological arousal and/or blood oxygen desaturation is required. In most cases, the sufferer is unaware of experiencing such an event at the time, often simply falling back asleep afterwards.
