Product Description

Industry Trends

There has been increased product innovation throughout the wound and tissue management market in both the European and the U.S. market. Companies are attempting to create products that are easier for physicians to use, fight infection, and take less time for wound closure. Although these products can be more expensive, a smaller quantity is needed during treatment, lowering costs for both patients and hospitals. Recent innovations in the U.S. wound closure market include Zipline Medical’s zip surgical skin closure system and Ethicon’s Dermabond Prineo mesh and cyanoacrylate-based skin closure system.

In the European wound care market, recent innovation in the negative pressure wound therapy market (NPWT) includes the release of single-use pumps. These NPWT pumps are witnessing a higher growth rate and are driving the NPWT market. These markets are growing significantly and driving the overall wound and tissue management market.

Globally, the wound care market is expected to be driven by an aging population as well as rising rates of diabetes, obesity and heart disease. In the Chinese market, these chronic health problems lead to major surgeries, chronic ulcers and other problems, which drive both the wound management and wound closure segments of the market. Further, expanding reimbursement coverage coupled with higher government spending on health care will also stimulate greater demand for wound care products.

Wound Care Market Share Insights

Of the many companies in the U.S. and Europe wound care market, Ethicon is the leading competitor. Ethicon dominates a large number of market segments; its vast product portfolio allows them to bundle a wide range of products and servicing agreements to secure hospital contracts and deter competitors from entering the market. They dominated the wound closure market, making up almost half of the market. They were the market leaders in sutures and skin adhesive segments and also held a significant share of the surgical stapler market.

In the U.S. wound care market, the second leading player in the wound and tissue management market is Acelity. Acelity also held a moderate share of the advanced dressing market, where they competed in the antimicrobial dressing, interactive dressing and non-adherent contact layer market segments.

In the European market, The second-leading competitor in the wound and tissue management market in 2018 was Medtronic, who acquired Covidien in 2015. Medtronic had the second-highest share in the wound closure segment, where they competed in the suture, stapler, ligating clip appliers and tissue adhesive segments. They were the market leader in the stapler segment. Medtronic’s strong growth in the stapler market was primarily driven by increasing demand for their premium Endo-GIA® staplers with Tri-Staple® technology. Medtronic also has a small share in surgical hemostat market, with their Veriset® patch, which is a combination hemostat-containing oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) and polyethylene glycol (PEG).

Other significant players in the global market include Smith & Nephew, 3M, ConvaTec, Coloplast, B. Braun, Takeda, and others.
