Product Description

Foot and ankle medical devices are used to treat a variety of indications. The devices included are those for the ankle joint, subtalar joint, midfoot and forefoot and for the toe digits. Ankle devices which include total ankle implants, ankle intramedullary nails, ankle plate and screw systems and ankle external fixators are used to treat arthritis of the ankle or traumatic ankle injuries. In India, the vast majority of ankle fractures are treated with external fixators and thus this market segment is the largest in the Indian foot and ankle market, which only includes ankle external fixators and subtalar arthrodesis devices. In India, subtalar arthrodesis fusion screws are used to treat calcaneal fractures, subtalar arthritis and, in some instances, flat foot. However, unlike in the United States where subtalar arthroereisis is a method for treating flat foot deformities, these products are not being used yet in India.
The ankle joint is the intersection of the tibia (shin bone), fibula and the talus; motion of the joint as a whole is hinge-like. The subtalar joint forms a secondary articulation that is composed of the talus and the calcaneal (heel) bone. Because the ankle is a weight bearing joint, it is subject to a greater degree of degenerative wear than non-weight bearing joints. Arthritic wear of the ankle is less common than in large joints, and typically develops in the aftermath of a traumatic injury. A typical example would be those who experience recurrent ankle sprains.
