Product Description
There has been an increase in education on the benefits of anti-adhesive products. Adhesions can cause chronic pain, bowel obstruction and infertility, and it is more expensive to repair an adhesion once it has occurred then to prevent it by using an anti-adhesive product. Some surgeons believe that excellent surgical technique can prevent adhesions from occurring, and these products do not have enough supporting evidence behind them.
The anti-adhesion market, also referred to as the adhesion prevention market, includes products aimed at minimizing surgical adhesions. Surgical adhesions are fibrous bands that form between tissues and organs, often as a result of injury during surgery. These adhesions can be formed during any type of surgery, including gynecological, abdominal, orthopedic, cardiac and neurological procedures.

Companies Analyzed
Of the many companies in the United States Anti-Adhesion market, Genzyme was the leader, followed by Ethicon and Baxter. Genzyme offers the Seprafilm® product. Seprafilm® is a combination of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and hyaluronic acid (HA), and it is the only product that large-scale clinical studies have shown to reduce not only adhesion formation, but also symptoms from adhesions. Ethicon sold the INTERCEED® (TC7) product, which is used in open (laparotomy) gynecological and pelvic surgeries. It is also more often used off-label than Seprafilm®. Baxter sells the Adept Adhesion Reduction Solution®. This product was the only liquid FDA-approved product on the market.
