The United States is dominated by 3 major players, Nobel Biocare, Straumann, and Dentsply Sirona. These three manufacturers take up nearly two-thirds of the market share in the United States alone.
In 2018, Nobel Biocare held a leading position in the dental implant, final abutment and dental implant instrument kit segments. The company also had a presence in the treatment planning software and surgical guides segments. Their success in the dental implant market was largely due to the strong growth rates of its NobelActive™ product line up.
The second-largest player in the dental implant market is Straumann. By pursuing an ambitious acquisition strategy, Straumann managed to obtain a great presence in the US dental market. In 2017, they acquired a leading provider of digital dentistry, Dental Wings. The acquisition has helped the company gain access to a large customer base for dental implants. Dental Wings’ CoDiagnostiX™ software has grown in popularity, and by 2018 the company held a notable share of the treatment planning software market.
In the last decade, Dentsply Sirona went through great deal mergers and acquisitions in order to acquire its strong market positioning. For instance, in 2016, Dentsply Sirona acquired MIS Implants, an Israeli company with a leading position in the value implant segment. The company’s decision was driven by the growing popularity of the value implant segment. Thus, to a premium implant company, such as Dentsply Siron, this acquisition provided a foothold in the value dental implant market.
Market Value and Industry Trends
The U.S. dental implant market was valued at around $1.1 billion by 2019. This is expected to increase over the forecast period, at a CAGR of 5.1%, to reach over $1.5 billion by 2025.
The drive towards commoditization has limited the dental implants market growth. While premium implant companies control a large portion of the market, more affordable value and discount options are on the rise. As a result, many companies have engaged in price cuts to attract customers from their competitors. Even premium companies are recognizing the trend towards more affordable implants by pursuing acquisition strategies of more affordable implant brands.
Particularly in the United States, dental implants and final abutments markets are driven by the rising number of dentists trained to place implant restorations in patients suffering from tooth loss. Implantology is being implemented into the dental education of general practitioners (GPs) at an increasing rate, creating growth across all market segments.
Another popular trend within the dental implant industry is the bundling of dental products. Established implant companies have expanded their portfolio to dental regenerative products while continuing to offer complimentary treatment planning software as a part of their implant orders.
DENTAL CARE STATISTICS AND DISEASE OVERVIEW

The untreated decay of permanent teeth affects over 40% of the people worldwide and is the most prevalent condition out of 291 diseases included in the Global Burden of Disease Study.Oral cancer is a high mortality disease and is among the ten most common cancers. It is estimated that 300,000 to 700,000 new cases occur every year. South and Southeast Asia are among the regions with the highest rates of new cases. About 95 percent of the cases occur in persons over 40 years old. While oral cancer is generally a disease of middle-aged men, women and younger people are increasingly being affected. Recently, the gender ratio has dropped from 6 to 1 in 1950 to about 2 to 1 in 2014. The average five-year survival rate of oral cancer is only 50%.
