Dentsply Sirona, a leading provider of dental technologies, has partnered with Carbon, a California-based manufacturer of 3D printed materials, to create 3D printed denture materials. These materials will be concocted with Carbon’s own Digital Light Synthesis technology for high-quality 3D printed dentures.
Dentsply Sirona has over 100 years of experience in the dental market, with a wide range of retainers, orthodontic implants, denture liners and mouth guards. They have also partaken in the dental scanning and CAD/CAM market already, and as such, this partnership will allow Dentsply Sirona to develop materials with improved aesthetics, strength and laboratory efficiencies within the realm of 3D printed dentures.
Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) technology brings a revolutionary new twist to the existing 3D printing industry, which consists predominantly of stereolithography. At its core, DLS uses a combination of light and oxygen to product high-quality prints from a pool of resin. This photomechanical process utilizes a liquid interface of uncured resin accompanied with a passing light source to create an unparalleled level of print quality and accuracy, especially for unorthodox or complex shapes. Additionally, Carbon has recently introduced its first medical-grade printing material, Medical Polyurethane 100 (MPU 100).
This trend towards innovative technological advancements will have a notable effect on the medical device market. iData’s report on the dental materials market states that emerging technologies such as 3D printing may additionally boost the procedural volume of direct restoratives. The time-saving benefits offered by these technologies are expected to shift a notable proportion of indirect restorative procedures into the direct restorative space.
Brian Ganey, General Manager of Carbon’s Dental Business commented on the recent collaboration with Dentsply Sirona, “This partnership with Dentsply Sirona is a testament to Carbon’s global vision and mission to enhance the digital ecosystem. Together, we will be able to offer the marketplace a complete digital denture solution that is superior in terms of strength and aesthetics.”
