3M has recently introduced their new dental CAD/CAM zirconia block, the 3M Chairside Zirconia. This innovative new product offers a balanced blend of strength and aesthetics while maintaining an attractively brief sintering time of about 20 minutes for crowns.

Designed for crowns and three-unit bridges, the Chairside Zirconia is offered in eight shade variations, matching the Vita classical shades for straightforward shade matching. It also demonstrates a high flexural strength grade of 800 MPa or more and boasts a fracture toughness that adheres strictly to ISO standards. Finally, the product’s cementation process has also been simplified, giving dentists the option to choose between two options: the 3M RelyX Luting Plus Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cement or 3M RelyX Unicem 2 Self-Adhesive Resin Cement.

“The overall promise of chairside dentistry has always been efficiency in a single-visit appointment,” said Karen Burquest, global business leader, 3M Oral Care. “Our new zirconia is designed for high-speed sintering to deliver even more efficiency without compromises in strength or aesthetics.”

The heightened structural integrity of the Chairside Zirconia gives it the benefit of a low minimum wall thickness of 0.8mm. As such, dentists have the opportunity to perform less invasive preparations and preserve more of the patient’s native tooth structure.

Market research published by iData Research reveals that the crowns/bridges segment dominates the overarching dental CAD/CAM prosthetics market, representing a greater portion of the market than that for dentures, veneers and inlays/onlays combined. Market trends show that chairside procedures, such as the 3M Chairside Zirconia, are especially desired by patients as it eliminates the need for a second visit for crown installation. Additionally, chairside procedures do not require a temporary crown, thereby reducing costs and any potential sensitivity due to temporaries. As such, chairside products are shown to be a promising segment in the dental CAD/CAM market.

The 3M Chairside Zirconia has been featured with pre-ordering options at the Chicago Midwinter meeting, but will officially launch at IDS in March. Product will be available for sale in the U.S. on May 1, 2019.
