Peripheral Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) Market Trends

An ongoing trend in the global IVL market is the increasing adoption of this innovative technology for treating complex calcified coronary artery lesions. IVL offers a safe and effective approach to address challenging calcifications, allowing for optimal stent deployment and expansion. The technique’s ability to modify calcified lesions while minimizing vessel trauma has gained traction among interventional cardiologists, leading to its integration as a valuable tool in percutaneous coronary interventions. This trend is driven by the growing recognition of IVL’s potential to improve procedural outcomes and enhance patient care in cases involving severely calcified arteries.
Peripheral Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) Market Share Insights

- Johnson & Johnson completed its acquisition of Shockwave Medical in 2024, the sole competitor in the IVL market, further strengthening Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s leadership in cardiovascular intervention. The company’s flagship product, the Peripheral Lithoplasty® Balloon Dilation Catheter, first received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for peripheral use in September 2016. Since then, Shockwave has advanced multiple clinical programs, including the DISRUPT II and III trials in the fem-pop artery and the DISRUPT BTK and BTK II trials evaluating IVL below the knee. In September 2019, Shockwave’s Lithoplasty® balloon also gained FDA approval for coronary use, further expanding its clinical and commercial reach.
