Hearing aid wearers are being urged to check the make and model of their device’s batteries after a recall was issued due to fears they could explode.

The ZeniPower brand batteries, which are used to power hearing aids, toys, remote controls, watches, key fobs and other small electrical devices are being recalled due to concerns that the battery may expand and could potentially explode on rare occasions.

The hearing aids have been sold both privately and offered by the NHS through GPs and pharmacists, among others, for both hearing aids and cochlear implants. Since 13 January, the NHS Supply Chain has new supplies of batteries which do not exhibit problems.

Andy Burnside, from Cornwall Trading Standards, said: “Responsible manufacturers are conscious of potential dangers and incorporate visible safety measures onto batteries to protect from subjecting a battery to conditions for which it was never designed and which could result in dangerous failure of the battery or appliance which may include explosion, fire and the emission of toxic fumes. When a problem is identified a recall is issued to prevent injuries or damage.”

Manufactured by Zhuhai Zhi Li Battery Co Ltd, the affected products, have a best before date of ’08-2018′ and ’09 2018′ on the outer blister packaging. To check the product codes click here.
