The two largest market segments in 2009 were dental furniture/cabinetry and practice management software, according to an iData report on the subject.

When combined, these two segments represented over 70% of the total combined market. In addition, many dental practices are looking to upgrade their practice management software and incorporate more advanced imaging systems in order to become chartless. While almost 40% of dental practices in the U.S. had chartless capabilities in 2009, this figure is expected to more than double by 2016.

In addition, the economic recession of 2008 to 2009 resulted in a decrease in the X-ray imaging market in the United States; however, digital system sales continued to grow.
