The emphasis on dental aesthetics in South Korea has increased over the past few years. This has resulted in continued market growth at a steady rate, driven by patient demand, as well as low procedural cost. Over the forecast period, the South Korean dental prosthetic and CAD/CAM market is projected to reach a value of nearly $4 billion.
The South Korean market has relied on traditional methods and materials for the fabrication of prosthetics, such as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. Consequently, there was little investment in CAD/CAM systems compared to more developed markets, such as the U.S. and parts of Europe.

Prices for CAD/CAM systems and CAD/CAM blocks are expected to gradually decrease throughout the forecast period. As scanner and milling units become increasingly affordable, more laboratories and dental clinics will be able to invest in the technology. The increasing use of CAD/CAM systems in conjunction with decreasing block prices will drive growth in the CAD/CAM prosthetics market.
However, CAD/CAM block sales are contingent on CAD/CAM system unit sales and the current installed base. Whether or not dental laboratories and offices can afford to purchase the system is a limiting factor for the CAD/CAM block market. In addition to initial investment costs of purchasing the equipment, there are associated maintenance fees and possible activation fees. Although prices for CAD/CAM systems have been on the decline, it is nevertheless still a large investment, especially for smaller labs and dental clinics.
In 2014, Sirona Dental Systems Inc. was the market leader in the South Korean CAD/CAM system market with over 50% market share. Sirona’s success can be attributed to their “pay-per-unit” (PPU) initiative with their inLab® 3D CAD software product. The PPU option provides smaller labs with an affordable payment plan, as they would only be required to pay on a per-case basis. Larger labs with high throughput can purchase an unlimited-use version for an upfront price.
