The total rotator cuff reinforcement market consists of allograft, xenograft and alloplast reinforcement devices. Despite being more expensive, the exceptional performance and longstanding clinical history of allografts make them preferable to both xenograft and synthetic devices. The allograft segment saw more units sold at a higher ASP than the xenograft and alloplast segments.
Competition among an increasing number of companies will contribute to pricing pressure for manufacturers. This will be counterbalanced by the emergence of thicker biologic dermal reinforcement devices that will drive up the average selling price (ASP). The shoulder is a heavily used joint; to further reduce the likelihood of a postoperative re-tear, thicker versions of reinforcement devices are preferred for the rotator cuff. Rotator cuff reinforcement devices, on average, require slightly thicker products, which have a slightly higher price point. Therefore, the ASP is expected to grow moderately by 2021.
The large number of allograft device sales relative to the other segments is due to the popularity of Wright Medical’s GRAFTJACKET™ product, which dominated the allograft segment. The allograft segment will remain the most popular segment in the rotator cuff reinforcement market as allografts have been most successful in reducing the postoperative re-tear rate of the rotator cuff tendons. The segment will benefit from the increasing use of these products in arthroscopic procedures, which will further drive unit sales in the near future.
