Radiofrequency, the “it” technology for wrinkle reduction and weight loss intervention.
As the baby boomer population continues to age, permanent solutions for weight loss and facial winkles are more frequently sought. Skin tightening and non-invasive fat-reduction procedures are growing rapidly. These procedures utilize radiofrequency technology to induce collagen contraction and to stimulate and disrupt cellular reproduction of adipocytes. Unit sales of non- invasive radiofrequency devices are on the rise, generating annual sales well over $100 million.
The non-invasive fat-reduction device market is driven by an increasing prevalence of obesity in the U.S.population. Compared to liposuction and lipolysis procedures, non-invasive fat-reduction procedures are painless, and run no risk of injury. “Based on our research, the two most popular radiofrequency non-invasive fat-reduction device systems are sold by companies, Solta Medical and Syneron,” says Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. The success of these procedures is due to repeated treatment applications. Each session lasts one hour and typically more than four sessions are required to achieve noticeable results. These procedures are expected to become increasingly more common with application numbers in the hundreds of thousands by 2019.
Radiofrequency skin tightening systems are also becoming more popular. Solta medical, BTL Aesthetics and Ellman International are three competitors in this market providing advanced radiofrequency technology to end users: Thermage®, Pelleve® and EXILIS®. The double digit unit growth is maintained by popular demand of radiofrequency application. It is non-invasive by comparison and can provide a youthful appearance with minimum pain and recovery time.
