Traditional dressings have a much lower ASP than advanced dressings and, wherever possible, traditional dressings are preferred over higher-ASP moist and antimicrobial dressings. These products will always be a mainstay in the wound care market. All segments of this market will exhibit low growth, as the market is mature. Gauze makes up a larger portion of the total market, due to the increased use of gauze for negative wound pressure therapy (NPWT).

Traditional wound dressings are categorized as passive wound dressings that cover over the wound. These wound-healing practices emphasize a dry wound bed and the importance of the formation of a scab. Dressings are used to cover and protect the wound and to absorb exudate. Evaporation is allowed to occur through the dressing, to keep the wound dry. When the wound forms a protective, hardened scab, the body’s natural healing process occurs more effectively underneath. Traditional wound care products comprise mostly gauze-based dressings in woven and non-woven sponge formats, bandages, tapes and cotton.
