Industry Trends

In the static compression market, poor circulation in the extremities can lead to venous leg ulcers and other conditions that cannot heal properly. Fluid can also accumulate in the leg, a condition known as edema. These conditions can be treated by wearing compression bandages, Unna boots or graduated compression stockings. Graduated compression stockings also aid in preventing varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and tired, achy legs. Excessive standing and sitting can cause blood to pool in the legs. When muscles in the calf contract due to leg movement, they naturally help blood return to the heart. Compression stockings, in conjunction with the circulatory action of the calf muscles, apply pressure to the leg so that blood and fluid movement is enhanced in the lower extremities.

The price of compression stockings has been declining steadily, due to competition and an influx of foreign players and private-label products. There is little product innovation, which keeps the ASP of these products low.

In the dynamic compression market, dynamic compression therapy uses a mechanical pump to fill a wrap or sleeve with air that is fitted over the foot, calf, entire leg, arm or other body part. By squeezing the appendage, fluid and blood is pushed back to the body, increasing blood velocity and circulation, which alleviates edema and helps ulcers to heal. Dynamic compression therapy is applied for a maximum of three consecutive hours per day. Some patients require these products for the duration that an ulcer develops and then heals, but the majority of patients need these devices for the remainder of their lives.

Overall, the U.S. compression therapy market is relatively stable, with a small increase in overall growth.

Compression Therapy Market Share Insights

In the static compression therapy market, the leading competitor in the static compression therapy market is BSN-JOBST, recently acquired by Essity. BSN-JOBST products are well known, and this brand recognition allowed them to gain a strong position in the market. They were the market leader in the highly competitive graduated compression stocking market. The company also participated in the Unna boot, anti-embolism stocking and compression bandage markets. In the Unna boot segment, the company offered the Gelocast™.

The second leading competitor in the static compression therapy market is mediUSA, which can be attributed to their strength in the graduated compression stocking market.

In the dynamic therapy market, the leading competitor is Cardinal Health, who recently acquired Medtronic’s patient recovery business. Their strength can be attributed to their leading position in the dynamic DVT prevention device market. The SCD™ compression sleeves have a specific FDA indication for DVT and PE prophylaxis within the at-risk patient population, including the bariatric and morbidly obese patient. These are compatible with the Kendall SCD™ compression system, which can detect each patient’s individual vascular refill time so they get customized therapy. They also offer the A-V Impulse™ Foot Compression System.

The second-leading competitor in the dynamic compression market is ArjoHuntleigh, who offers products for both dynamic DVT prevention and pneumatic compression. However, the majority of their share is in dynamic DVT prevention, with a reduced share in the
pneumatic compression market.
