Insurance reimbursement rates, including those of Medicaid and Medicare, have shifted away from covering highly expensive type I tests in favor of HST, which are less expensive. This has led to a decline in the market for type I devices. Recent annual declines have been more modest, but they are expected to become more pronounced in the years to come.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a respiratory disorder, wherein an individual’s airway is obstructed during sleep as muscles relax and the airway walls and tissue collapse. The resulting asphyxia arouses the individual from the deeper stages of sleep so that normal breathing can be restored. It is this disruption of regular sleep rhythms that causes the negative symptoms associated with sleep apnea. During an apneic event, breathing ceases long enough to allow several normal breaths to be missed, and these disruptions continue throughout the sleep session. In order to be considered an apneic event, a ten-second interval between breaths and neurological arousal and blood oxygen desaturation is required.
