Product Description

The shoulder is a highly mobile joint that is also inherently unstable to allow for range of motion. This joint is anchored by muscular attachment to the spine in the back and to the sternum (breastbone) through the clavicle (collarbone). The shoulder is not involved in direct load bearing articulation with the axial skeleton.
Similar to the hip, the shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint that provides for a degree of movement that is greater than other types of joints in the body. The head of the humerus is the ball component that articulates with the glenoid fossa, which is the socketed surface of the scapula, or shoulder blade.
The group of muscles and tendons that stabilizes the humerus in the glenoid fossa is the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff can be damaged through overuse or strain which may be caused by sports injuries, for example. The integrity of the rotator cuff is integral to the stability of the humeral head within the glenoid fossa.
