Global Embolic Protection Device Market Share Insights

Global Peripheral Thrombus Management Market

In 2008, MEDRAD’s acquisition of Possis brought the AngioJet® mechanical thrombectomy device into its portfolio, renowned for disrupting emboli using pressurized saline. Boston Scientific later acquired AngioJet® in May 2014, establishing its widespread use in venous and arterial thrombectomy procedures. Alongside this, in 2019, Boston Scientific further expanded its reach by acquiring the BTG EKOS® thrombectomy device, specifically tailored for PE thrombectomy. Despite not being utilized in AV therapy procedures, this strategic acquisition is expected to enhance the company’s dominance in the thrombectomy market by consolidating its product portfolio.

In contrast, Inari Medical swiftly gained a substantial market share through its ClotTriever® and FlowTriever® devices, both capable of independent use without thrombolytics. This unique attribute significantly reduced treatment times for patients. The FlowTriever®, sanctioned in 2018, became the second approved device exclusively designed for PE treatment and captured a significant market share due to its premium pricing relative to EkoSonic®. Meanwhile, ClotTriever® addresses the rapidly growing market related to peripheral vasculature, particularly in deep vein thrombosis (DVT) treatment. Inari Medical’s innovative approach positions the company strongly for further expansion and market share growth.

Penumbra specializes exclusively in the traditional thrombectomy market segment. It offers the INDIGO® CAT®, Separator®, and Pump MAX™ product families primarily for use in arterial and venous applications. The INDIGO® CAT® and Separator catheters work in conjunction with the Pump MAX™ console, which, however, is not covered in this analysis.
