With the introduction of the Affordable Care Act, a shift has occurred which moved care out of acute care centers, due to the cost burden it places on the U.S. medical system. Home care is the most economical place to deliver care; therefore, the lowest reimbursement rate is associated with it. Reimbursement rates are beginning to be more competitive for home care and long-term acute centers to try and entice patients to be moved to those areas more quickly. Over the forecast period, a shift from acute care to home care or long-term centers is expected.
Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), or vacuum assisted closure (VAC), is used to promote the healing of large or chronic wounds, to fight infection and enhance the healing of burns. A vacuum is used to reduce pressure around the wound, drawing out excess wound fluid and cellular wastes. A gauze or foam dressing containing a drainage tube is applied to a deep, or irregularly shaped, chronic or surgical wound and is sealed with transparent film. The tube is connected to a pump that applies subatmospheric pressure to the wound bed, removing fluid, allowing blood vessels to dilate and enhancing granulation of wound tissue. The vacuum may be applied continuously or intermittently, depending on the type of wound being treated and the clinical objectives. Intermittent removal of wound exudates supports the cleaning and drainage of the wound bed and the removal of infectious material.
