Product Description

A number of topical hemostats are used in surgeries. Topical hemostats are suitable for minor bleeding and oozing blood from injured capillaries and venules. Physiologic hemostasis occurs with vascular constriction and is a complex process in which blood changes from a fluid to a solid state in order to control tissue damage and bleeding. Thrombin binds to platelets and becomes activated. They activate fibrinogen into fibrin. The fibrin monomers combine to create fibrin structures that coagulate open arteries. Platelets aggregate at the injury site (the surgical incision) to form a temporary plug. Topical hemostats mimic this physiological process by adding collagen or thrombin to the site by mechanical means (acting as a physical substrate to aid in hemostasis), or by facilitating the body’s cells to aggregate.
