The global insulin pump market is dominated by 3 major players, Medtronic, Insulet, and Roche.
In the U.S. and Europe insulin pump markets, the leading competitor is Medtronic. The company holds the dominant position in the durable insulin pump market, primarily attributed to a large installed base. Medtronic’s MiniMed® 670G, a hybrid closed-loop system, received CE Mark approval in June 2018 and was successfully launched in select regions in autumn 2018. The MiniMed® 670G is an integrated CGM pump that automatically adjusts basal insulin delivery based on glucose readings measured every five minutes.
In the United States, the second major player is Insulet, which is attributed to its monopolistic position in the patch insulin pump market. The company offers the Omnipod® System, which consists of a wearable, tubeless and wireless pod that delivers insulin, and a personal diabetes manager (PDM) that can be programmed to personalize insulin delivery. Insulin pods are attached to the body via an adhesive and are typically worn for three days before disposal. The PDM is used to initiate insulin infusion, calculate suggested insulin doses and test blood glucose levels.
In the European insulin pump market, the second-leading competitor is Roche. The company currently offers the Accu-Check® Insight and Accu-Check® Combo durable pumps. Accu-Check® Insight features a pre-filled insulin cartridge and is designed for patients with very low basal insulin requirements. Accu-Check® Combo features a traditional insulin reservoir and is designed for patients that require a large volume of insulin per day. Roche’s Accu-Check® Solo, a patch pump, received CE Mark approval in July 2018 and had a limited commercial launch in Austria, Poland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
The vast majority of the total insulin pump market value is occupied by the durable pump segment. Durable pumps account for such a large portion of the market because they are significantly more established than patch pumps and simple pumps, which were launched in the U.S. in 2005 and 2012, respectively. It is expected that durable pumps will maintain their dominance over the forecast period, despite the growing market share of patch pumps and simple pumps. Although Medtronic and Tandem hold a duopoly in the U.S. market as of 2018, SOOIL and other competitors are expected to enter the market over the forecast period.
The second-largest segment is the patch pump market, which accounts for a notable portion of the total market value. Patch pumps are an attractive therapy option for the patient demographic that values the wireless features and significant cost savings on the initial investment of the device, relative to durable pumps. Although Insulet holds a monopoly in the U.S. market as of 2018, Cellnovo and other competitors are expected to launch patch pump products over the forecast period.
