Product Description

Foot and ankle medical devices are used to treat a variety of indications. The devices included are those for the ankle joint, subtalar joint, midfoot and forefoot, and for the toe digits. Ankle devices, which include total ankle implants, ankle intramedullary nails, ankle plate and screw systems and ankle external fixators, are used to treat arthritis of the ankle or traumatic ankle injuries.
The ankle joint is the intersection of the tibia (shin bone), fibula and the talus; motion of the joint as a whole is hinge-like. The subtalar joint forms a secondary articulation that is composed of the talus and the calcaneal (heel) bone. Because the ankle is a weight bearing joint, it is subject to a greater degree of degenerative wear than non-weight bearing joints. Arthritic wear of the ankle is less common than in large joints, and typically develops in the aftermath of a traumatic injury. A typical example would be those who experience recurrent ankle sprains.

Arthrodesis, or joint fusion, fixes the bones of a joint together and eliminates the joint’s articular function. It is considered to be the standard in the treatment of arthritis. Motion may be assumed by the surrounding unfused joints to compensate, but the fixation has a side effect of placing these surrounding joints at further risk of degeneration. Joint fusion is accomplished through various metal devices, most of which are similar to those used in internal fixation for traumatic injury purposes.

Arthroplasty is the reconstruction of a joint by means of replacement with an implanted device. Failed joint fusions can be revised, although repeated surgeries are associated with an increased risk of infection and limb shortening.
