As of 2015 there has only been one such product offered on the market in China: rhBMP-2 manufactured by Shanghai Rebone. There are few BMP products available in the world. For example, one is Infuse® by Medtronic. Strykers OP-1, which had been sold to Olympus Biotech, is no longer available as Olympus Biotech ceased sales on May 31st, 2014. Other products include Wrights Augment®, and less known brands from Asian manufacturers (notably Korean). INFUSE® and OP-1 are two different forms of bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs) that belong to a larger family of proteins called transforming growth factor ?s.
BMPs were first discovered by Marshall Urist in 1965. Since the discovery, there have been 20 regulatory protein molecules identified to date. BMPs specifically regulate the production of bone within the human body. These proteins are functionally relevant during embryonic development in the formation of the skeleton. Urist established that demineralized bone matrix, when implanted in ectopic sites in rodents, helped to induce bone regeneration. Urist discovered that a single dose of BMP combined with autograft can repair non-union fractures that are 3 cm to 14 cm in size.
BMPs are involved in many signaling pathways including those that cause increases in parathyroid hormone levels and the expression of osteocalcin, which stimulates osteoblast differentiation. These groundbreaking findings led to the isolation and cloning of several BMPs, which have been exploited for their healing properties.
