Thrombin binds to platelets and becomes activated. They activate fibrinogen into fibrin. The fibrin monomers combine to create fibrin structures that coagulate open arteries. Platelets aggregate at the injury site (the surgical incision) to form a temporary plug. Topical hemostats mimic this physiological process by adding collagen or thrombin to the site by mechanical means (acting as a physical substrate to aid in hemostasis), or by facilitating the bodys cells to aggregate.
