China Market Report for Surgical Camera Systems 2016 – MedCore

The introduction of high definition (HD) technology has brought considerable change to the surgical
camera system market. Many facilities have replaced their standard definition (SD) camera systems with
HD capable camera systems. HD cameras are capable of capturing images and videos at a higher
resolution than their SD predecessors, allowing for clearer and more accurate images and videos. This is
very beneficial for minimally invasive surgeries (MIS) in which the surgical camera system is the only
medium between the surgeon and the area being operated on. The extensive SD installed base is still a
significant driving force in the Chinese market.

Surgical camera systems consist of two components: the camera head and the camera control unit (CCU).
The camera head is attached to the scope, which is inserted into the patient. Some surgical cameras
include an optical zoom, which allows for easy adjustment of the image size. Optical zoom is superior to
digital zoom as it does not sacrifice image quality for magnification. Light, which originates from a light
source, travels through the scope to the camera head where it hits charge coupled device (CCD) chips that
convert the visual images produced by the camera into electrical signals. These electric signals are then
transmitted by an electrical cable to the CCU. The CCU contains all the electronics that do not have to be
fitted in the camera head and processes the video signals it receives from the camera head. HD CCUs can
vary in terms of resolution capabilities. Some HD models are backwards compatible, meaning they can
receive and send SD signals as well as HD signals. Once the signals are processed by the CCU, they are
sent to a surgical display, an image capture device or a printing device. True HD requires a minimum
resolution of 720p or 1080i and 16:9 aspect ratio.
