Cardiac Surgery Statistics and Procedure Trends

It is estimated that over 800,000 cardiac surgery procedures are performed annually in the United States. The largest portion of the procedures comes from coronary artery bypass graft procedures which accounts for almost half of the total procedures. Despite being the most common type of procedure, coronary artery bypass grafting procedures are declining as more effective alternatives are growing. The second largest type of procedure would be the open-heart surgical heart valve replacement procedures; however, surgical heart valve replacement has slowed down in growth, mainly due to the introduction of transcatheter heart valve replacement products.

In Europe, there are an estimated 500,000 procedures performed annually, of which, the majority are coronary artery bypass graft procedures.

Cardiac surgery procedures are expected to increase over the forecast period. New types of products and technological advancements will spur growth. In addition, there will be a growing need for cardiac surgery as the average age of the population increases.
