Ventilation equipment covered in this chapter includes manual resuscitators, non-critical transport ventilators and critical-care transport ventilators. Non-critical transport ventilators are further broken down into automatic resuscitators, hybrid ventilators and mid-tier transport ventilators.
Automatic resuscitators constitute the simplest form of automatic ventilation equipment. These devices do not generally feature alarms or monitoring capabilities and operate based on the simultaneous selection of volume and pressure. They can cycle automatically or can be triggered manually with the push of a button.
The next step up in automatic ventilation technology is hybrid ventilators. These devices are called hybrid devices because they contain a mix of features from transport and emergency ventilation equipment. In terms of transportation features, the devices tend to be extremely light. Transport ventilators in general tend to weigh less than 20 kg. However, hybrid ventilators are usually much lighter than this. Their light weight makes them suitable for a more diverse range of clinical applications in the field. Like emergency ventilators, these devices are equipped with basic parameters. They are pneumatically driven with basic functions like volume and frequency alarms. Some devices in this range are integrated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) function.
Unlike automatic resuscitators and hybrid ventilators, mid-tier transport ventilators allow the user to adjust rate and volume independently. Many also include features such as adjustable CPAP and peek end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). Mid-tier transport ventilators are distinguished from critical-care transport ventilators by the ventilation modes on which the device is capable of operating. Mid-tier ventilators are generally only equipped to perform pressure and volume modes.
