A vertebral compression fracture (VCF) occurs when the bone tissue of the vertebral body collapses in the spine. There are various causes of VCFs, but the most common is osteoporosis. Typically, the lumbar region of the spine is affected, resulting in the anterior section of the vertebral body collapsing. This can cause the spine to tilt forward. In multi-level cases, kyphosis (hunchback of the spine) can result from a VCF. In addition, VCFs can result from malignancy, infection or trauma to the spine.
