In a multinational survey on the assessment of pain when removing dressings by Molnlycke, their Safetac® dressings were ranked as causing the least amount of pain to patients. When used in the place of some traditional adhesive-based dressings, dressings with Safetac technology demonstrably reduced traumatic injuries to wounds and peri-wound skin. They were also associated with significant reductions in the levels of wound-associated pain measured before, during and after dressing change. Advanced dressings with Safetac soft silicone adhesive technology significantly reduced pain during wear, at dressing removal, and after dressing change, when compared with advanced dressings with traditional adhesives.
It is possible that patients who suffer from acute and chronic wounds can interpret wound pain as a stressor. It is known from previous research that stress can delay wound healing; however, little is known about the influence of pain in this relationship. In the UK alone, wound care represents a chronic burden to the NHS, with over 200,000 people affected and total costs of £3.1 billion in 2006.
Pressure ulcers are common among elderly nursing home residents. To be effective in managing these wounds, a dressing should maintain a moist environment, facilitate healing, absorb exudate, remain in place for a number of days, and prevent trauma to the surrounding skin. In a recent clinical trial conducted by Molnlycke, most other dressings show evidence of stratum corneum attached to the adhesive, except those from Molnlycke, which appeared to be free of any attached stratum corneum. There were no peri-wound skin blisters reported following treatment with the absorbent foam dressing in any of the study patients.
