According to a series of reports on the U.S. market for soft tissue reinforcement and regeneration by iData Research, the segment for hernia repair continues to dominate the market and is expected to grow substantially over the forecast period.
The market for hernia repair has grown due to the general increase in hernia incidence in the United States. The market includes several reinforcement devices used to repair inguinal and ventral hernias. Although ventral hernia repair dominated its segment, there were in effect less ventral procedures performed than inguinal. The overall price of a ventral hernia procedure is higher, while inguinal hernia repairs are more prevalent.
Ventral repairs will continue to dominate, mainly due to the increasing popularity of expensive biologic reinforcement devices, such as xenografts. Xenografts are becoming popular due to their likelihood of acceptance by the recipient and faster healing time. They are generally quite strong, reducing the risk of re-herniation. Since ventral hernias require a strong graft over a larger area, xenografts will continue to grow rapidly in their market segment.
While xenografts are becoming quite popular, their synthetic counterparts, allografts, are still used at a higher frequency. “While allografts generally experience the most post-operative complications, they are still quite cost effective,” explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. The pricing and frequency of use of these two types of grafts has contributed significantly to hernia repair’s dominance of the soft tissue repair market.
In general, an aging population and increasing cohort of those aged 65 or older in the U.S. will increase the need for surgeries which will cause medical complications related to soft tissue repair. Sales of products that aid in soft tissue repair will grow as this demographic steadily increases. Patients who experience extended immobility, such as the obese or elderly, are also at risk for developing chronic wounds or tissue damage, which will increase the number of potential patients.
LifeCell is the leading competitor in the soft tissue repair market. The bulk of their revenue is derived from providing products for challenging hernia repairs, such as Alloderm® and Strattice™. Other notable competitors in the soft tissue repair market include Organogensis and C.R. Bard. Organogensis is the proprietor of Apligraf®, which has been used to treat over 250,000 patients since 1998. Other competitors in the soft tissue repair market include Ethicon, Covidien, Wright Medical, American Medical Systems, and others.
