The folks at Karl Storz recently installed a new state-of-the-art integrated operating theatre at the Spire Harpenden Hospital in Hertfordshir, UK. The OR1 NEO® system is specifically designed for minimally invasive surgery procedures. This new setup will allow for the best possible surgical outcomes at the facility. In total, the installation included two bespoke theatres, one equipped with an ultraclean canopy, increasing the number of operation theatres at the hospital to five.

The new integrated operating room features full HD endoscopy camera technology, visualisation, documentation and communication. The surgical device layout, from the endoscopic devices, video and data sources, and peripheral devices such as the surgical table and ceiling lights, are all configurable depending on the procedure being performed and by individual surgeon preference. The entire room can be monitored from a centrally located touch-panel, giving surgeons complete control over every aspect of their surgery, with all necessary information accessible to them instantly.

This customizable type of environment based on the needs of each surgeon, allows for reduced operating times, increases efficiency, and ultimately speeds up recovery for patients. Additionally, thanks to connectivity with hospital ICT systems, the OR1 NEO® also acts as a clinical education tool with the ability to broadcast enhance audio-visual communication from the OR, whether for teaching, telesurgery, or teleconferencing.

Since its beginnings in 1945, the KARL STORZ family company has grown into a global manufacturer and distributor of endoscopes, medical instruments, and devices. We are no giant on an international scale but a leader in the things that matter: creativity, flexibility, and expertise.

Our range of endoscopic instruments for human medicine, veterinary medicine, and industrial endoscopy now includes more than 15,000 products. The most recent KARL STORZ developments are in digital documentation systems and comprehensive operating room concepts. As a system supplier, the company combines its expertise in endoscopy with software solutions to achieve integration in the operating room and to support clinical process and resource management.
