Construction of two advanced operating rooms at Blessing Hospital’s 11th Street campus in Quincy, Illinois further positions the hospital as a regional leader in health care. The yearlong
$8.5 million project announced last week will give the hospital a new hybrid operating room featuring advanced imaging equipment and one multipurpose room with the extra floor space needed for other types of equipment.
“It’s truly about advanced surgical technology to complement minimally invasive surgery,” said Maureen Kahn, president and chief executive officer of Blessing Health System.
That technology is becoming the norm across the nation to give surgery teams the best images possible when they’re repairing heart valves, placing stents, repairing aneurysms or treating blocked arteries. Vascular surgeon Dr. Tim Smith, with Quincy Medical Group and Blessing, said by 2018 it is expected that 75 percent of vascular surgeons will be using hybrid operating rooms. The new technology will bring Blessing in line with major health care centers across the state and the nation.
Blessing performed nearly 15,000 surgical procedures last year, and importantly, countless numbers of future patients will benefit as these advanced operating rooms go online. Blessing Health System has been a blur of activity in recent years, with patient outcomes and quality care as the top goals. Moorman Pavilion, a $70.4 million, 177,044-square-foot addition that includes 52 single-bed patient rooms, a medical-surgical oncology unit and the Behavioral Health Center, was completed this year.
Illinois Community Hospital, which is part of the Blessing Health System, opened a $3.28 million geriatric psychiatric unit in March to meet the needs of families and patients who want elder care close to home. Advances in medicine, cutting-edge technologies and new treatment strategies have made the medical field one of the fastest-changing sectors in the world. Clearly, the physicians, surgeons and other professionals with these skills are raising the bar nationwide, and hospitals of all sizes are benefiting from the best practices that previously were followed only in the largest facilities. Blessing Hospital and its sister organizations are growing better to serve the critical needs of patients and the larger community.
