The European intraocular lens market in 2014, multifocal lenses were not as popular as toric lenses in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.
According to a recent study by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), the intraocular lens market (IOL market) in Europe is best broken down two ways: in terms of hydrophobic vs hydrophilic products, and in terms of monofocal vs premium products. However, new market intelligence reveals marked differences among different premium intraocular lens products.
The premium intraocular lens markets in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom are ones to watch. In general, we’re seeing a reduction in average selling prices, but unit sales are more than making up the difference. In Germany alone, 2020 is projected to see approximately 26,000 additional sales as compared to 2013.
However, these increased sales are not projected to be uniform. New insights from iData reveal that the unit sales breakdown between toric, multifocal, and toric multifocal intraocular lenses leans in favor of toric sales.
As the intraocular lens market continues to grow, a number of groundbreaking technologies have entered the cataract surgery side of the business. For example, there have been dramatic improvements to the technology for phacoemulsification which has allowed cataract surgery to be performed with increasingly smaller incision sizes. This, in turn, gave rise to the necessity of injectable intraocular lenses that can be folded into a delivery device. More recently, two new technologies were introduced for cataract surgery: femtosecond lasers and planning software for cataract surgery. The long term impact of these new technologies on IOL selection and development will be determined over the coming years as the equipment is put into practice and the results documented.
