After product quality, staying with a known and trusted brand ranked highly for dental practitioners regarding dental consumables, but a lack of awareness hinders sales for big-ticket dental equipment.
According to a global survey for dental equipment and materials conducted by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), the leading global authority in dental market research, dental practitioner respondents overwhelmingly preferred brands for three reasons: product quality, brand loyalty, and price.
“The performance of dental products is respected first and foremost,” comments Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData Research. “That said, the CDS conference survey has indicated that brand loyalty is significantly important to dental practitioners. Often more so than price.”
While brand loyalty was highly relevant regarding brand preference for composites and dental bonding agents, price was more relevant for dental burs. 3M ESPE’s composite material offerings were reportedly the most popular, while DENTSPLY was the clear preference for bonding agents. There were two clear brand leaders for burs: Brasseler and SS White.
Other key findings from iData’s CDS Midwinter Report– Global Survey for Dental Equipment and Materials showed key insights regarding major purchasing decisions dentists face today in the evolving world of modern dentistry.
- Chairside CAD/CAM Systems and Scanners: Unlike consumables, the survey indicates that brand preference is not a major factor for the market for intraoral scanners and CAD/CAM systems.
- CAD/CAM Prosthetics: Respondents were evenly split regarding their preference for CAD/CAM prosthetics versus their traditional counterparts. However, respondents did tend to find CAD/CAM prosthetics stronger.
- Diode Lasers: There is still room for these products to make their way into dental offices, with almost 60% of respondents not owning one. However, interest is not universal; but a large percentage of respondents would be interested in acquiring a diode laser in the future. Still, this implies a sizable growth opportunity for diode lasers in the market. So far, Biolase is reportedly the most popular brand of diode laser currently in dental offices.
