According to a recent survey on oral health in China, 94% of those surveyed have some kind of dental issue. Dental care in China is still at an early developmental phase. Statistics like dentists per capita, visits per year, and the variety of treatment options are all relatively low. But as the standard of living rises and awareness of dental health increase due to medical and aesthetic reasons, demand for such procedures are set to grow exponentially.
According to the Third National Oral Health Epidemic Investigation Report released by the Chinese Ministry of Health in 2009, 66% of children aged 5 had cavities, along with 29% for children 12. For adults the situation was even worse. Of adults between the ages of 35 and 44, 88% had cavities, of which only 8% had seen treatment. Nearly all senior citizens had cavities, at 98.4% of people aged between 65 and 74.
Since the dental care market in China is still in its infancy, the government has been less restrictive of foreign investment in the market, compared to other sectors of health care. This makes it easier for foreign companies to participate in China’s dental care industry. As China’s middle class continues to grow, so do opportunities for foreign businesses.
