According to a new report on the US market for video, high-tech and integrated operating theatre equipment by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), the hybrid operating room (OR) component segment is the fastest growing operating room equipment market in the US. Hybrid ORs are specialized integrated rooms that provide flexibility to perform open and minimally invasive surgeries for cardiovascular, orthopedic, spine, neurosurgical, vascular and other general purpose surgical procedures. Currently, these hybrid ORs consist of a fixed imaging system associated with an image guided surgical table that is fully integrated with the imaging system.
Hybrid operating room components are experiencing very high growth due to their high price. Traditional integrated ORs are only designed to deal with the video signals generated by the imaging system itself, but a hybrid operating room requires several other modalities that are utilized in tandem with the imaging system, meaning more advanced integration components are necessary. The result is that these rooms must layover a second video integration product. This is what brings in the typical OR integration companies, where they have to work together with the imaging companies in the hybrid space.
“This extra equipment requirement has resulted in higher average selling prices (ASP),” explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. “Hybrid ORs have an increased number of monitors and booms, which requires a higher level of integration and results in higher pricing.”
Each hybrid OR is also equipped with a C-arm. The C-arms included in hybrid rooms are fixed systems that are part of the room itself. There are four main companies that offer these specialized C-arms; Siemens, Philips, GE and Toshiba. Siemens has been leading the imaging market with the majority of shares.
In terms of the imaging systems themselves, the ASP varies considerably. Siemens offers a high-end system, which is the most expensive on the market, as well as a lower end system in order to compete in both price ranges. Toshiba offers the least expensive system available at the lower end of the market. While GE and Philips offer higher to midrange systems.
STERIS was the leading competitor in the hybrid operating room component market in 2015. STERIS has been growing in the integrated OR market over the last few years but recently made a strategic move and acquired Black Diamond Video, which has bolstered their market share and allowed them to be the leading integration company for hybrid operating rooms. STERIS has benefited greatly from the acquisition, as they can now utilize Black Diamond’s integration components along with their market leading boom and lighting systems. Also, the fact that they are partnered with the market leading hybrid room imaging company, Siemens, has allowed them to act as a single integration vendor when it comes to hybrid room constructions.
Other notable competitors in the hybrid OR market includes Skytron, Stryker, Karl Storz, Maquet, Image Stream Medical, Banion, and Brainlab among others.
