Let’s get real
Procedure volumes for angioplasties have stabilized after historically being both over reported and over prescribed. In 2012, there were 975,000 angioplasties performed in the U.S., an increase over 2011.
What will the future bring?
Throughout the forecast period, the number of angioplasty procedures is expected to increase at slightly as the population grows and as next-generation stents with lower thrombosis risk are approved for use in the U.S. by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“The day I’m not improving will be the day I hang up the racket.” -Venus Williams. Studies have shown that coronary artery bypass graft procedures (CABG) are as effective, or slightly more effective, than stenting procedures at improving patient outcomes over the long term. However, stenting procedures (angioplasties) are associated with faster patient recovery times and have lower costs than CABG procedures.
